Semel Goldman
started the business in 1904, located at 11 Essex Street,
New York City.
Outside of
locks and hinges, the firm sold such diverse items as household
scales, hand drills, augers, axes, hand-bells, horse clippers
and drawing knives. One of their main suppliers since inception,
Sargent & Company, remains its major source of supply today.

Morris Goldman
|
Upon
Semel's death in 1937, his surviving sons Benjamin, Morris and
Epharim incorporated on December 24, 1937 the firm, Semel Goldman,
Inc. The company was moved to 7 Essex Street. Benjamin was named
president and Morris was named secretary. Epharim was a doctor
and had no say in the business. This remained until Benjamin died
in1973. Morris became president and his son, Steven, who had been
with the firm since 1969, became secretary. Morris died in 1992
and Steven assumed the title of President. |

Today
Semel Goldman, Inc. offers a full range of architectural builders'
hardware products from over 100 manufacturers. Their main customers
are located in the metropolitan New York area. However, the firm
does a large percentage of their business on the national level.
Customers continue to be general contractors, institutions, office
buildings, wholesalers, locksmiths and other retailers. There are
over 500 customer accounts including cash and COD accounts. |
